Meet Our Stylists: Georgina Allsop
By Style Counsel / April 26, 2018 / Blog,Interviews / 0 CommentsSay hello to ur Stylist Georgina Allsop, she is a Junior Art Director at Boden and has previously worked for QVC as a fashion assistant. Read our chat with her to find out how a break up landed her a dream job (see us women don’t need men to achieve our goals!), her opinions on fashion magazines and why she loves Style Counsel.
How did you get into styling?
I’ve always had a love for fashion and everything that the creative industry has to offer- but I think it would’ve stemmed from secondary school which was a creative arts school that really encouraged you to follow your passion. I then went on to do a degree in fashion, it was a toss-up between fashion and psychology, I went with fashion but wasn’t quite sure what field I wanted to specialize in. Strangely enough, I have to thank my ex for that as we broke up so I went on a job hunting spree and ended up landing a dream job at QVC as a fashion assistant! From there I progressed to become a senior stylist!
You used to work for QVC as a stylist, how did you find styling people on TV for the benefit of viewers and do you find the skills you learned there useful when styling on the app?
Styling for QVC was intense and full on but so fun at the same time. It’s a type of styling I have yet to come across since. It’s so fast-paced and it’s essential that you are constantly on top of your game as you could be changing 3 models up to 13 times each an hour on your own and if a director changes the order then that’s when everything becomes a little manic! However, I gained so much from this experience! I learned that certain things that you wouldn’t ever think would work together sometimes do and it’s really important to dress based on your profile and figure! Working for QVC also taught me how to style people of all different age ranges.
You are now a Junior Art Director for Boden, what is your favorite part of this job and why?
My current job was an amazing progression for me, having the ability to give my opinion on shoots, help out with the styling and decide the overall feel for the shoot, is so exciting! I also love the company and the ability to work with so many great people!
What advice would you give to someone who is feeling self-conscious about their style?
Everyone has those days, even as a stylist I definitely have those days. Some days I’ll change like 10 times before I leave the house (no exaggeration). I think it is important to find a style that you feel comfortable in and suits you, then rock it- don’t feel you have to always follow trends. Sometimes the best outfits are classic just with a little update to follow the trends eg. The shape of your jean!
Do you think that magazines play a role in creating false ideals for women when it comes to fashion?
Magazines are so important in the fashion industry and I can understand how they could create a negative idea of how to look however I also think they are a beautiful selling tool to inspire and to give people something to aspire to. Recently the big push to have more diversity in the fashion world means we have models of all shapes and sizes. Working with models you learn that sometimes clothes do hang better on tall slim girls but sometimes they look even better on a curvy girl. Magazines are supposed to illustrate the clothes in their best light so I think it’s important to choose the right girl to fit the dress.
Who is your main fashion inspiration and why?
I don’t really have a main inspiration I think it’s so important to take inspiration from many different places and people. A few of my favorite bloggers are Rachael Clifton and Liv Purvis and I also love Shay Mitchell as she is so gorgeous and has a great Instagram feed. But, I love being inspired by people I know, people on the streets and different cultures too!
What is your favorite thing about being a Style Counsel Stylist?
I love being able to give feedback to people who are really unsure of what they are wearing! Self-confidence is a challenging thing and if we can help someone feel better about themselves then why wouldn’t you like to do that! I also love seeing how the counsel receives my outfits too!
When you are not working and styling our users how do you spend your time?I’ve always been a dancer, so I try to attend a couple of dance classes, I enjoy bouldering, I drink a lot of coffee and I am a big traveller I really love to see the world – I think it’s so important to learn about other cultures and places. Inspiration is everywhere you just have to find it!
Where is your favorite place to shop?
I like shopping in so many places, I’m not really a one shop kind of girl. I love shopping online and on the high street as well as in charity shops, I also find myself on Brick Lane for great vintage finds. Another place I love to shop is Olive clothing which is a beautiful little boutique shop in Cheltenham.
What was the last item of clothing you bought?
I’ve been updating my bags recently so I’ve been naughty and bought a few of those, but my last proper clothes purchase was probably a Jason Wu top I bought from a New York sample sale during my trip there!
If you could only wear one outfit for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Probably a pair of dungarees and a striped top underneath… I know it sounds so basic but I live in my dungarees they are so versatile, you can’t go wrong with them!
